The word 'chakra' literally means 'wheel' or vortex in Sanskrit. Chakras are the energy centers in our bodies. Although we have hundreds, there are seven main chakras that we need to maintain at a healthy level.
Energetically, the chakras correspond to the glands of the endocrine system. Being out of balance energetically, can lead to physical, emotional and mental imbalances. The endocrine system is a collection of glands that are responsible for the production of hormones that regulate systems such as metabolism, sexual function and reproduction. Hormonal and energetic imbalances can even affect your mood. When our chakras are healthy and balanced, it enables the endocrine system to more effectively do its job, and also allows us to easily have a happy and healthy mind, body and spirit.
When clearing and balancing the chakras, it is best to start with the lower chakras and work your way to the upper chakras. The first chakra is the root chakra. It is also known as the base chakra or muladhara. This chakra is located at the base of the spine and is associated with the element of earth. The color of the root chakra is red.
The functions of the root chakra are creative expression and abundance. Kundalini energy resides in the root chakra prior to the Kundalini awakening. The root chakra is also associated with security, self-acceptance, survival and power. It contains both the feminine and the masculine energy. To achieve union within yourself, the root chakra must be properly balanced.
When the root chakra is not in balance or is blocked, you may feel very defensive, feel constantly threatened, be unreliable, may fear being around others or fear being out in the world. In extreme cases, you may even suffer from panic attacks. At the physical level, you may experience various digestive issues or even impotence. You can also have problems with your spine and suffer from lower back pain.
When the root chakra is underactive you may have difficulties telling people, " no ". You may become passive and suffer from numerous insecurities. You may often be fearful and socially withdrawn. When the root chakra is overactive you may be aggressive, inflexible and dogmatic. When this happens, you are ruled by your EGO.
When the root chakra is clear, balanced and healthy you are true to yourself, grounded and unshakable. You are unstoppable as you pursue your passions. There are many ways to clear and balance your chakras. Here are some of the different ways you can do it.
Reiki - you can have a session with a Reiki practitioner or you can administer Reiki to yourself. Reiki is life force energy and is available to us all.
Affirmations - you can listen to root chakra affirmations as you go about your day.There are many root chakra affirmations videos available on YouTube.
Chakra meditations - There are also many excellent chakra meditations available on YouTube.
Grounding - connect with the Earth by walking barefoot or gardening for example. Connect with nature in whatever way resonates with you.
Practice Yoga or Tai Chi - There are specific poses that work well for clearing and balancing the root chakra (as well as the other chakras).
Crystals such as Red Jasper, (a RED crystal of your choice is best for the root chakra) help with clearing and balancing the root chakra. You can wear your crystal, carry it in your pocket or place it on the area of your root chakra.
Sound and vibrational healing. You can listen to a video (headphones are best) or use a crystal singing bowl tuned to the frequency of the root chakra.
Eat high vibrational foods that are naturally red in color such as strawberries, cherries or beets.
NOTE: If you use crystals in your chakra work, remember to cleanse and recharge them after each use. Place your crystals in the light of the full moon or place them next to a piece of selenite.
